Vivian Ernest Chang graduated MB CM from the University in 1895, making him the first Chinese graduate of the University.

He was born at Shanghai, son of S Tingfan Chang, the Secretary of the Chinese Legation in London.

Chang received his early education at Allesley Park College, Warwickshire, before enrolling at the University in the summer session of 1887 to study Medicine. Chang studied over the course of eight years at the University, from 1887-1892, and the summer session of 1894.

In 1895 Chang moved to London to practise medicine, becoming a naturalised British citizen in 1898. He later moved to Leeds, Yorkshire, where he lived with his wife Louise and their four daughters. In addition to running a medical practice in Leeds, Chang served as Member of the Executive Committee of the Leeds Division of the British Medical Association. He died in 1930.
