David Murray
The lawyer David Murray (1842-1928) was a member of Glasgow University Court, 1896-1899 (Rector's Assessor) and 1903-1928 (General Council Assessor); Chairman of the Finance Committee and a member of Library and Museums Committees. He presented his large collection of rare books and manuscripts, the Murray Collection, to the University Library in 1927, and endowed the David Murray Lectureship on the History of Learning (founded in 1929). He is the author of Memories of the Old College of Glasgow (1927).
Murray graduated MA from the University in 1863, and was awarded an LLD in 1888. In 1871 he was one of the founders of the law firm Maclay, Murray & Spens and he served as Dean of the Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow. In 1876 he helped found the Glasgow Ladies Higher Education Association.
