Edward McGirr
Edward McCombie McGirr, (1916-2003) was Muirhead Professor of Medicine from 1961 to 1978 and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine from 1974 to 1981. He was appointed Dean of Faculties and awarded an honorary DSc by the University in 1994.
Born in Hamilton, McGirr obtained a BSc from the University in 1937 and graduated MB ChB in 1940. He served in the Far East in the Royal Army Medical Corps from 1941 to 1947 and joined the Department of Medicine at the University in 1947, where his research into enzyme defects underlying dishormonogetic goitre led to the award of an MD with Honours, and the Bellahouston Medal. He was appointed to the Muirhead Chair of Medicine the following year and the department acquired an international reputation for the quality of its clinical research.
McGirr was President of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 1970-1971 and was awarded a CBE in 1978.
