Surgeon Lieutenant William Hamilton Cassels Donald was born in Prestwick and studied Medicine at the University, graduating MB, ChB in 1943. He joined the Royal Navy and served aboard the destroyer HMS Boadicea.

Donald was killed on 13 June 1944 when Boadicea was torpedoed by a German aircraft bomber off Portland Bill, while escorting a convoy of merchant ships on their way to Normandy. Only 12 members of the crew survived.
