Lieutenant Alexander Grant McKimmie of the 6th Lincolns was born in Rothesay and attended the High School of Glasgow. He studied at the University for two years, intending to take an Honours degree in Classics, but in September 1940 he was posted to the 2nd Cameronians.

McKimmie subsequently joined the 6th Lincolns and served in Madagascar, India, Iran, Palestine and Italy. He was killed leading a night attack on 15 October 1944, leading a night attack in Northern Italy.
