Biography of Bernard Mackle

Able Seaman Bernard Mackle was born in Motherwell and graduated MA from the University in 1934. He joined the Royal Navy and served aboard the escort aircraft carrier HMS Avenger.

On 15 November 1942 Avenger was sailing for the Clyde from Gibralter when she was struck by a torpedo fired by a German U-Boat. Mackle was one of more than 500 men killed in the huge explosion which followed.
