Joseph Shapiro was born in Glasgow on the 21st May 1914 and his father, Harry, was a Warehouseman and Scotch Draper.

Joseph first matriculated at the University of Glasgow at the age of 17, in 1931-32 and studied Medicine. During his six years at University he would study the subjects required to qualify with a medical degree such as Surgery, Anatomy, Materia Medica, Pathology and Vaccination. Joseph was a good student achieving six Second Class Certificates, during the course of his degree, and a First Class certificate for Systematic Surgery in the session 1933-34.

Joseph Shapiro graduated MB ChB on the 24th April 1937. He changed his second name soon after graduation and is listed as Joseph Spears in the 1938 General Council Register.

Joseph Spears returned to the University to study for an MD which we gained in 1946 with the thesis title: ‘Malaria control by aircraft spraying of Paris Green with special reference to wartime experience in Egypt’.
