Biography of John Campbell 2nd Marquess of Breadalbane
John Campbell, 2nd Marquess of Breadalbane (1796-1862), was Rector of the University from 1840 to 1842.
Born in Dundee, Campbell was styled Lord Glenorchy until 1831 and Earl of Ormelie from 1831 until he succeeded to the marquessate in 1834. He entered the House of Lords, serving as Lord Chamberlain. He was a leading freemason and he became one of the leading supporters of the Free Church of Scotland after the Disruption in 1843.
