The presenter and entertainer Johnny Ball (1938- ) was University Rector from 1993 to 1996. He helped promote the Faculty of Science's centenary celebrations in 1993 and was awarded an honorary DSc by the University in 1997.

Born in Bristol, Ball became famous in the 1970s as a presenter of children's television programmes like Think of a Number and Johnny Ball reveals All. His children's books remain popular.

The election of 1993 was contested by Russ T Sharp; the lawyer Helena Kennedy QC; poet and performer Liz Lochhead; actress Pamela St Clement; University graduates Mark Boyle and Alex Duff, and Yusuf Abdullahi. The actor Mark MacManus was forced to withdraw from the contest owing to ill-health.
