Biography of Rodney Hirst
Rodney Julian Hirst was Professor of Logic and Rhetoric at the University, 1961 to 1981, and Vice-Principal from 1976 to 1979. He was Dean of the Faculty of Arts from 1971 to 1974 and Senate Assessor on the University Court from 1973 to 1978.
Born in Yorkshire, Hirst studied at Magdalen College, Oxford and served in the REME during the Second World War. He became a lecturer at the University of St Andrews and came to Glasgow in 1949 as a lecturer in Logic. His book Problems of Perception (1959) established his international reputation and he was a contributor to the Encyclopedia of Philosophy.
