Biography of John Carlyle Johnstone
John Carlyle Johnstone graduated from the University MB ChB in 1877 and MD in 1892.
Johnstone was born in Roxburghshire in 1855 and was educated at private schools in England and Dumfries Academy before entering the University.
He graduated MB ChB with honours in 1877, gaining first class certificates in most of his classes and winning five class medals. He gained his MD in 1892 with a thesis called ‘Notes on the use of sulphonal' for which he received a commendation.
After graduation Johnstone was appointed assistant medical officer at the Fife and Kinross Asylum, and then became assistant physician at the Royal Edinburgh Asylum where he assisted Sir Thomas Clouston: a leading Scottish psychiatrist.
In 1885 Johnstone was appointed the medical superintendent of the Roxburgh District Asylum at Melrose where he became very interested in the nursing of the patients, and devoted much effort to the training of nursing staff. During his career he contributed many papers to the Journal of Mental Science and was active in the local Division of the British Medical Association where he represented his Division on the Edinburgh Branch Council. He was also elected by the county council as a medical member of the Roxburgh County Insurance Committee.
He resigned in 1917 due to rheumatic troubles but took up work again as a junior assistant physician at Craig House Mental Hospital later in the year.
John Carlyle Johnstone died in 1927.
