Henry Nisbet was born in Glasgow in 1818 and became one of the earliest missionaries to Samoa in 1843, along with fellow student George Turner. Nisbet attended the University in 1837, enrolling in Robert Buchanan's Logic class. He subsequently served as a missionary for the London Missionary Society in Samoa arriving there together with George Turner in 1842. Nisbet was conferred an honorary LLD by the University in 1871 in recognition for his work in and on Samoa.
