Biography of James Andrew Robertson
James Andrew Robertson was born on 11th August 1871 in Dumbarton. His father John was a physician. James was one of ten brothers, all of whom graduated from the University of Glasgow in either medicine or sciences.
James began attending the University of Glasgow at the age of 17, taking classes in chemistry, botany and natural philosophy. All of which he passed on first attempt. His final year exams were in surgery, clinical surgery, medicine, midwifery and forensic medicine. James was awarded a second-class certificate for his work in pathology in third year. He was also awarded a commendation for surgery displaying his dedication to his studies. James graduated from the University on 10th November 1892.
After graduating James moved to South Africa. He had at least one daughter, Miss Sheila Audrey Margaret Seaton Robertson, who after her death left over £690,000 to the university in her father’s name in order to fund medical research. James Andrew Robertson died on 10th September 1935.
