Biography of James Dickson
James Holms Dickson was Professor of Archaeobotany and Plant Systematics. He is currently an Honorary Senior Research Fellow in the Division of Environmental and Evolutionary Biology.
Born in Glasgow, Dickson attended Ibrox Primary School and Bellahouston Academy. He matriculated at the University in 1955 and graduated BSc with first class Honours in Botany in 1959. Following graduation, he took up a position as a Research Assistant and then Senior Research Assistant at the University of Cambridge. He was awarded a PhD in Botany by the University of Cambridge in 1970.
Dickson came to Glasgow in 1970 as Lecturer in Botany. He progressed to Senior Lecturer, Reader and, in 1997, became Professor of Archaeobotany and Plant Systematics. He retired in 2002. Visit his staff page.
