Biography of Andrew Marshall Downie
Andrew Marshall Downie graduated BSc from the University in 1899.
He was born at Shettleston, Glasgow on 18 August 1875, son of James, a manufacturer. Downie enrolled at the University in 1896 to study Engineering, during which time he was awarded 1st prize in the Engineering Laboratory class in session 1896-97. He graduated in Engineering on 18 April 1899 and went on to become a civil engineer, later gaining a diploma from the Technical College in Mechanical Engineering.
During the First World War, Downie served in the Army, becoming Major Andrew Marshall Downie of the 5th Battalion Highland Light Infantry. He died of wounds received in Gallipoli on 20 July 1915, age 39.
