Biography of Archibald Arthur

Archibald Arthur (1744-1797) was an alumnus of the University who was Professor of Moral Philosophy, 1796 to 1797, and University Chaplain, 1774 to 1794. He was also employed as the University's Librarian from 1780 to 1794.

Arthur matriculated to study at the University in 1758 and graduated MA in 1763. He became a minister, and then from 1780 to 1796 he was employed as an assistant to Thomas Reid, Professor of Moral Philosophy, taking all the professor's teaching duties. He succeeded Reid in 1796 but died the following year.
