William Hamilton 
Biography of William Hamilton
William Hamilton (1758-1790) was a graduate of the University and succeeded his father Thomas as Regius Professor of Anatomy and Botany in 1781.
Born in Glasgow, Hamilton graduated BA (1775) and MA (1776) from the University before spending two years studying Medicine at the University of Edinburgh. He went on to work for William Hunter as an assistant in charge of his dissecting room, returning to Glasgow in 1780 to assist his sick father to teach Anatomy students. Hunter recommended his appointment to the Regius Chair in 1781.
In 1782, Hamilton inherited his father's surgical practice and was also in great demand for his skills as an obstetrician. He was one of the city's most successful consultants and a distinguished teacher but died in 1790 before he could write his planned system of Surgery.
