Biography of Gerald McKenzie Stuart Sichel

Gerald McKenzie Stuart Sichel graduated BSc from the University in 1908. He was born in Burghersdorp, South Africa, son of Gothfried August (Godfrey), a company director and a member of the South African Parliament.

Sichel was educated at Bishops, the Diocesan College in Cape Town, before enrolling at the University in 1905, from where he graduated BSc in 1908. He was captain of the University hockey team XI.

Sichel remained in Glasgow, where in 1913 he married Marjorie Scott Bull. He spent his career with British Westinghouse Company, starting as a steam-turbine fitter in Glasgow to becoming responsible for the regions of South and South-Eastern England at their headquarters in London, an appointment he held for 29 years until retiring in 1956. Sichel was elected Member of the Institution of Engineers in 1944, and in 1957 was the chairman of the National Executive Committee of the Electrical Power Engineers’ Association.
