William Ramsay 
Biography of William Ramsay
William Ramsay (1806-1865) was an alumnus of the University who was Professor of Humanity, 1831 to 1863.
Born in Edinburgh, Ramsay came to Glasgow to study at the University from 1823 to 1826 before going on to Trinity College, Cambridge. After graduating BA (1831) he returned to the University on his appointment to the Chair of Humanity. He and the Professor of Greek, Edmund Lushington, were considered to be among the most talented academics of their day in Scotland.
Ramsay published a number of learned works including an Elementary Manual of Roman Antiquities. After he retired due to ill-health, his nephew George Gilbert Ramsay was appointed to the Chair.
