Biography of Alexander Stevenson

Alexander Stevenson (c 1725-1791) was Regius Professor of the Practice of Medicine from 1766 to 1789. He was elected Clerk of Senate in 1777.

Stevenson graduated MD from the University in 1749. He lived in Edinburgh during the 1750s, when he was a member of the Select Society and the Philosophical Society, and he was a member of Glasgow's Literary Society and Hodge Podge Club.

In October 1773, Stevenson was one of the professors who breakfasted with James Boswell and Samuel Johnson at the Saracen's Head Inn. He persuaded the University in 1786 to subscribe £500 to the building fund for Glasgow Royal Infirmary. In 1789, complaining of ill health, he asked the Faculty to appoint his nephew, the University lecturer Thomas Hope, as his assistant and successor. Hope succeeded his uncle after the latter's death in 1791.
