Leopold Israel Glushak graduated from the University MB ChB in 1912.

Glushak was born in Werro, Livonia, Russia, modern day Voru, in Estonia. His father, Joseph, was a rabbi, who had travelled with his family in Eastern Europe, England and South Africa before becoming a cantor in Glasgow where they had relatives living.

Glushak enrolled at the University in 1907, and financed in part his medical studies by teaching at the Garnethill Synagogue Hebrew School. Among his professors, for whom his veneration was noted, were Sir William Macewen, Regius Professor of Surgery and pioneer of brain surgery, and Sir Robert Muir, Professor of Pathology. Leopold was awarded numerous second-class certificates during his studies, as well as a prize for the 1911 Diseases of the Ear class and a first-class certificate for Dermatology, before graduating in April 1912.

He married Annie Gordon in Glasgow in 1914, before moving to the USA, where he first worked at Georgetown University Medical School in Washington DC, teaching Anatomy and Physiology, and practiced as an orthopoedic surgeon. Moving to New York, he worked as chief of clinic at the Hospital for Joint Diseases and was an assistant clinical professor at the New York University Medical Center.

Glushak was also the founder and president of the University of Glasgow Club of North America in 1952.
