Vladimir Friede enrolled at the University in 1913, aged 18, to study Science.

Friede was born in St Petersburg, Russia, son of a mechanical engineer. He gave his home town as Nan Len, China.

Friede appeared to have immigrated to the USA in 1926, where he would become the co-founder of Friede & Goldman, Ltd, in the 1940s, now a global naval architect and marine engineering company.
