Biography of Charles Henry Dyer

Charles Henry Dyer graduated MA from the University in 1899.

Dyer was born 20 August, 1876 in Tokyo, Japan. He was the oldest of the three Dyer brothers, whose father was Henry Dyer, the noted engineer and educator who was integral in pioneering Western style education in Japan.

Dyer began his studies at the University in 1894 at the age of 18. He attended classes in the Arts, such as Natural Philosophy and Political Economy. After graduating MA in 1899, Dyer continued on to the Edinburgh Theological College and then St John’s College in Cambridge where he received the Naden Divinity Studentship, and his MA in 1910. He became an Anglican clergyman at the All Saints Church in Cambridge (1903-4), and continued working at the University of Cambridge into the 1930s.
