Biography of Francis Campbell Ross Douglas
Francis Campbell Ross Douglas graduated MA from the University in 1913. He was born in the small town of Wakopa, Manitoba in October 1889 to farmer Francis J B Douglas.
Douglas enrolled at the University of Glasgow in 1907, attending classes in Mathematics (Adv Hons), Latin, Political Economy, Natural Philosophy (Hons), Chemistry, and Astronomy. He graduated MA on 21 April 1913.
After graduation, Douglas worked as a solicitor, and journalist. Actively involved in Labour politics, Douglas moved to London, where he served as Mayor of Battersea (1922-1923) and was later elected MP for Battersea North in 1940. He also served as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Secretary to the Board of Education, and to the Home Secretary, but withdrew from the House of Commons in 1946 on his appointment as Governor of Malta, a position that he held until 1949.
In 1947 Douglas was awarded the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG) for his services, and on 18 April 1950, he received a peerage as 1st Baron Douglas of Barloch of Maxfield in Sussex. He later served as Deputy Speaker of the House of Lords from 1962 until his death in 1980.
