Charles Truan enrolled at the University of Glasgow in 1926, aged 27. He was born in Le Lieu, in the Swiss canton of Vaud, son of a Adrien, a post official.

Truan had already received a degree in Theology from the University of Lausanne before continuing his studies at the University of Glasgow in 1926-27, where he took classes in Hebrew, New Testament, and Church History.
