Biography of Alexander Dürst
Alexander Dürst enrolled at University in 1947 to study English while working as a student assistant teacher, appointed by the Glasgow Corporation Education Department.
Dürst was born in Zurich in 1913, son of Albert, a merchant. He attended the gymnasium in his hometown of Aarau, the capital of the canton of Aargau, and the University of Basel. He worked as a primary teacher (1935), becoming a secondary teacher in 1941.
Upon enrolling at the University in 1947, Dürst declared his aim was to undertake a PhD in order qualify to teach English and German at gymnasium level. However, he returned to Switzerland on 9 March 1948, after a five-month period of study and work in Glasgow.
In 1955, his treatise on Green Henry, a novel by the Swiss author Gottfried Keller, was published in Berne.
