Biography of Peter Emil La Cour
Peter Emil La Cour first enrolled at the University of Glasgow in 1903 for two years to study Engineering under Archibald Barr.
La Cour was born in 1879 to Holger and Caroline Amalie Le Cour at Bodal Estate in Stenlille Parish, Holbæk, Denmark. The Le Cours were an influential family in Denmark at the time, and had strong Scottish connections through Peter Emil’s Uncle and 12 cousins: His Uncle Lauritz Ulrich La Cour (1834-1889) was a shipbroker, merchant, coal exporter, and colliery owner of the Townhill Coal Company. His cousin Ethel Maud La Cour (1869-1957) became the first professional principal of present day Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh.
Before enrolling at the University, La Cour studied from 1898-1901 at the Technical University of Denmark (Polyteknisk Læreanstalt) until illness ended his studies. At the age of 24, he resumed his studies in Engineering at the University of Glasgow, where he took classes in Engineering, Higher Dynamics, Drawing and Calculations.
La Cour went on to work in a range of sectors, moving in 1906 to Quebec, where he was employed by the Canadian Railway. He moved back to Denmark in 1924 where he continued his employment with the Canadian Railway as an ambassador abroad. He then went on to work in the banking sector, and from the 1940’s onwards he was an agent for a American-Polish Transatlantic Transport Company.
