Agnes Rothe
Agnes Rothe was one of three Danish women who came to study Medicine at the University of Glasgow from 1908, the others were Julie Elise Hoffman and Christine Larsen.
Agnes was born in 1881 in Lyngby, Denmark. She was born Duban-Petersen, but changed her surname when she was adopted by Janus Lauritz Rothe, a manager, and his wife Hertha Riise who she came to live with in 1884.
Rothe studied at the University of Glasgow for three years, before returning to the Edinburgh School of Medicine for Women to complete a medical degree. At Glasgow, Rothe attended classes in Materia Medica, Anatomy, Surgery, Pathology, Clinical Medicine, Physiology and Midwifery. During her time in Glasgow she was an active member of Queen Margaret Christian Union, and regularly partook in philanthropic work in deprived areas of Glasgow.
Being religious, Rothe had aspired to use her medical education to become a missionary in China or India. However, Agnes, who had struggled with illness all her life, died suddenly in 1913 from gastro intestinal bleeding at Muir Hall, student accommodation, in Edinburgh. She is buried there at Dean Cemetery.
