Biography of Gilbert Burns Ellis

Gilbert Burns Ellis (or Elles) enrolled at the University in 1871 for two years to attend an Arts course. He was born at Dunedin, New Zealand, son of Andrew Jamieson Ellis, who he cites as a customs collector and officer. His father was the Captain of the Philip Laing which took out the first settlers to Otago and arrived at Dunedin on 14 June 1848 from Greenock. He subsequently held a number of official appointments at Invercargill and at the Bluff, and his wife, Clementina was a daughter of Thomas Burns, the first minister to the new settlement of New Edinburgh (Dunedin, Otago) and a nephew of the poet Robert Burns.

Gilbert Burns Ellis settled at Oporto, Portugal, where he died in 1891.
