Biography of General George Middlemore

George Middlemore matriculated at the University in 1788, attending George Jardin's Logic class. Middlemore was born in Grantham, Lincoln, son of William Esq.

Middlemore pursued a successful military career, climbing the ranks from being appointed Lieutenant in the 86th Foot on February, 1794; Captain in October, 1794; Major in the 48th Foot, in 1804; Lieutenant-Colonel in 1815; Major-General in 1830; and Lieutenant-General in 1841. He saw much service at home and abroad in India and Africa, which also included service during the Peninsular War under the Duke of Wellington at the battle of Talavera (1809), for which he was awarded the Talavera gold medal, and subsequently made CB in 1815.

In 1830 as major-general, Middlemore commanded the troops in the West Indies. He became the first governor of Saint Helena from 1836 to 1842 after its handover from the British East India Company to the British Crown, and oversaw the repatriation of Napoleon's remains from there in 1840. He was previously lieutenant-governor of Grenada from 1833 to 1835, and served as governor of the Windward and Leeward Islands in 1843.

He died at Tunbridge Wells on 18 November 1850.
