Biography of Alexander Houstoun
Alexander Houstoun enrolled at the University in 1784 as an Arts student, taking Latin. He was born around 1770, son of Andrew Houstoun of Jordanhill, and grandson of Alexander Houstoun, founder of the Glasgow merchant firm trading with the West Indies.
Houstoun served as lieutenant-governor of Grenada until his resignation in April 1802. He returned to Scotland where he was elected MP for the Glasgow District Burghs in 1802-03, 1809-12, and 1818-20. He died on 22 March 1822 at Clerkington, Haddington.
