Biography of Johann Nicolaus Kiep

Johann Nicolaus Kiep matriculated at the University in 1889, at the age of 42, to study an Arts course in German Literature.

He was born at Hamburg, son of his namesake, a merchant.

Kiep took courses in German Literature in the years 1889, 1890 (Non-curricular) and 1891 (Extra-mural), while he was serving as Imperial Consul at Glasgow. He was followed at the University by his wife, Charlotte, who undertook a course in Italian Languages in 1903. They brought up their children in Glasgow, one of who, Otto Kiep, became Chief of the Reich Press Office and was involved with the resistance against the Nazis for which he was executed in 1944. His nephew Walter Hermann Kiep, was a medical graduate of the University in 1908, who went on to serve as a doctor in the British Army.
