Khorshid Mohammed Al Naqib (1927-1972), BSc, FGS, FRGS, was the first Iraqi student to study at the University of Glasgow from 1948 to 1951.

Born in Kirkuk, he was the son of a policeman, Mohammed Al Naqib and received sponsorship from the Iraqi Government to study in Glasgow. Graduating with an Ordinary degree in Geology, he went back to work at the Geological Department of the Iraq Petroleum Company Ltd, where he’d worked briefly before. He was stationed at various times in Kirkuk, Basra, Baghdad and the Kurdistan Mountains. He was back in London on a research project at Queen Mary College in 1956, and in Oklahoma, Kansas and Colorado training with oil companies in 1960. A passionate geologist he also taught in Kirkuk in the 1960s.

He was elected a Fellow of the Geological Society on 17 December 1952 and a member of the Mineralogical Society in 1954. He was also a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, Geologists Association and Royal Geographical Society.

Al Naqib was widely respected internationally, publishing on the regional geology of the Middle East and participating at international congresses in India, Egypt, Russia, Denmark, Czechoslovakia, Lebanon and Iraq. He was a founder member and first president of the Geological Society of Iraq.

He died in London on 24 December 1972, aged only 45, while on temporary secondment.
