Wilfred Sweeny Scotland

Biography of Wilfred Sweeny

Wilfred Sweeny graduated from the University of Glasgow BSc in 1946, and obtained a PhD from the University in 1950. He was born on the 22nd of April 1926 in Glasgow, the son of Alfred Sweeny, a publican.

Wilfred first matriculated at the University in 1943 and studied subjects such as Applied Physics, Mathematics and Applied Chemistry. Sweeny graduated with first class honours in Chemistry in November 1946. His PhD was entitled Studies in pyrazine chemistry .

After University, Sweeny moved to America to work for DuPont in their fibre division. He is credited with the discovery of Nomex, a lifesaving flame resistant fibre worn by firefighters, race car drivers and military personnel.
