Biography of Joy Tivy
Professor Joy Tivy was a prominent biogeographer who taught at the University of Glasgow. She was born in Carlow, Eire in 1924.
Tivy studied Natural Sciences at Trinity College, Dublin, graduating with First Class Honours in 1946. After graduating she went onto become a Scholar of Trinity College. Tivy then moved to the North of England, working as a Geography and Biology teacher at Leeds Girls High School. She was then appointed to the position of Assistant in Geography at Edinburgh University, a role she held for six years.
In 1956 Tivy began to work for the University of Glasgow, and was appointed to various positions such as Lecturer, Professor and Head of the Geography Department. After her retirement in 1989 she held the title of Senior Research Fellow. She was widely published throughout her career, having edited and contributed to various prominent biogeography textbooks including The Human Impact on the Ecosystem (1981) and Agricultural Ecology (1990). From 1955 to 1965 Professor Tivy was the editor of the Scottish Geographical Magazine. In addition to her academic work, Tivy also served as adviser to both the European Parliament and the Scottish environmental agency. Her various achievements were recognised by the award of Fellowship of The Institute of Biology and The Royal Society of Edinburgh.
