James Hendry
James Hendry (1885-1945) was a University graduate who was appointed Muirhead Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 1927 and was Regius Professor of Midwifery from 1943 until 1945.
Hendry graduated from the University MA (1906), BSc (1909) and MB, ChB (1910). He was Muirhead Demonstrator under Diarmid Noel Paton, the Professor of Physiology and, in 1913, an assistant at the University of Freiburgim Breisgau. During the First World War he served as an Adjutant in the University OTC and, from 1916 to 1919, with the RAMC in France.
In 1919 Hendry returned to Glasgow as an assistant to Professor John Munro Kerr in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and he succeeded Kerr as Muirhead Professor in 1927. He was Medical Director of the Royal Maternity and Women's Hospital in Glasgow and a gynaecological surgeon at the city's Royal Infirmary. He was made an MBE.
