Biography of Peter Macnaughton
Peter Macnaughton graduated MA from the University of Glasgow in 1821.
Peter was born at Finglen in Comrie, Perth, Scotland and was baptized on August 13, 1797. His parents were John McNaughton (or McNaughtan), a farmer, and Ann McInnis.
Peter first matriculated at the University in 1813 and took classes in Greek, Logic, Ethics, and Physics. In 1823 he was ordained into the Parish of Dores, Inverness, Scotland and was assistant Pastor of the Parish of Auchterarder in 1832. Reverend Peter Macnaughton went to Canada in March 1833 and served as minister of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Vaughn. Reverend Peter took up his ministry at St. Andrew’s in August 1833 and served there until his return to Scotland in July 1844.
While in Canada, Reverend Peter married Agnes Monteath of Perth, Scotland, in Toronto, Ontario and they had 8 children together.
On his return to Scotland, Reverend Peter was minister of the Parish of Dores however, at the request of the St Andrew’s congregation, he returned to Canada in July 1846. He resigned from St. Andrew’s in December 1848 and served a Parish in Pickering from 1849 to 1856.
Peter Macnaughton resigned from the Church in November 1856 and returned to his home in Vaughan Township. He died on 10th May 1878 of heart disease and is buried in the Macnaughton family cemetery in Maple, Ontario.
