Addison 1727-1897 reads: George Stewart Beatson. Born at Greenock, 22nd May, 1814. MA Glasg 1835, MD Glasg 1836. LRCS Edin 1836. CB (military), 1869. Assistant-Surgeon in the Army Medical Department, 1838. Inspector-General of Hospitals (afterwards Surgeon-General), 1863. Did duty on the staff in Ceylon, 1839-51. Surgeon to the 51st Foot in the second Burmese War. Served in Turkey during the Crimean War. Deputy-Inspector-general in the Ionian Islands and Madras. Principal Medical Officer of British Troops in India, 1863-68 and 1871-74. In medical charge of Netley Hospital, 1868-71. Honorary Physician to the Queen, 1866. Died suddenly at Knollswood, Simla, 7th June, 1874. Father of (1) Lieutenant-Colonel Sir George Thomas Beatson, KCB, MD; (2) Colonel Charles Henry Beatson, CB, IMS; (3) Colonel Finlay Cochrane Beatson, CB, and Colonel William J A Beatson, RA.
