Biography of James Collins
James was a son of Robert Collins, a merchant of Ushers Quay, Dublin, Ireland, and his wife Mary Morgan. He was born there 3 April 1795, matriculated at the University of Glasgow in 1809 and graduated MA in 1812.
He was licensed by Tyrone presbytery of the Irish Presbyterian Church in 1814 and ordained 17 September 1816 as minister of Old Presbyterian Congregation of Dromore, Co. Down [later First Presbyterian Church, Dromore]. He remained there all his life and his work resulted in a large increase in the membership of that congregation.
James married Ellen Hall on 27 August 1818 at Dromore. She was the daughter of Dr James and Mrs Anne Hall. Robert died on 19 December 1863 and Ellen on 6 January 1864 both at a nephew's home in Belfast, Co. Antrim, Ireland. Burial was at First Presbyterian Church, Dromore. There were no children in this family.
